I study the motivations behind empathy and moral decision-making, including empathetic insensitivity to mass suffering and out-groups, and the role of motivations in shaping such empathy gaps. I also study other moral emotions such as anger and how it relates to collective action. Applications of these questions include to human-robot interactions; to political polarization and empathy in partisan contexts; to human-animal interactions; and to understanding empathetic sensitivity to social disparities.
