Michael Brownstein

Michael Brownstein is Professor and Chair of Philosophy at John Jay College and Professor of Philosophy at The Graduate Center, CUNY. His research focuses on the intersection of science, ethics, and social change. He has been a visiting scholar at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University. Brownstein’s research has been featured in the New York Times, The Guardian, Vox, and more. He is the author of The Implicit Mind: Cognitive Architecture, the Self, and Ethics (Oxford 2018), co-editor of the two-volume series, Implicit Bias and Philosophy (OUP 2016), and most recently, Somebody Should Do Something: How Anyone Can Help Create Social Change (MIT 2025, with Alex Madva and Daniel Kelly).
